现代美术   Amazing Art  Ms. Helen Sanchez-Zhu

Come and experience art throughout the ages. In this art class you will learn about different artists’ drawings and paintings. Realism, Still Life, Impressionism, Abstract Art and more! Watercolors, crayons, pencils and pastels will be used.

Mrs. Helen Sanchez-Zhu has a BFA from SUNY Buffalo and MS from Fordham. She has taught both Art and ESL for over 30 years. Mrs. Sanchez-Zhu recently retired from the public schools of the Tarrytown where she taught ENL and was assistant to the principal. Mrs. Sanchez-Zhu is a painter and has had shows in New York, Connecticut and in Spain. Her family is from Spain where she travels to every summer. She holds art shows and also judges art shows for young children at local festivals. Mrs. Helen Sanchez-Zhu is well recognized as a creative artist and a passionate educator.

Avid 视频编辑大班 Avid Video Editing Sr. Larry Guo

Avid is a powerful video editing system used by editors in Hollywood and major television networks. We will use its bare-bones version- Media Composer First to teach video editing basics.

Two important points to keep in mind when considering of choosing this class
1, The software is free, but it needs to run on a relatively fast computer.
2, It is not very easy, even for some adults. So the students need to have some commitment.

创意美术小班   Creative Art and Design Jr.   黄海燕

在本课程中,学生将学习绘画和设计基础。我们将一起探讨艺术的流派和风格,创意表现的方法,以及创意思维的训练。

黄老师拥有清华大学美术学院艺术设计博士学位,西安美术学院绘画硕士学位,2015年至今任职Oracle首席设计师。黄老师早年从事版画油画的艺术创作,作品多次发表参展并获得国内美术展览奖项。曾在浙江大学、西安理工大学、华中师范大学任教15年,出版设计专著两本,授课包括素描、油画、版画、平面设计、界面设计、可视化设计、动画设计等。

黄老师认为早期的艺术设计启蒙将培养孩子发现美和创造美的能力,以及艺术性视觉表达的能力,从而给孩子们带来更多的机遇。未来最不可能被AI取代的职业中,有超过一半的职业和艺术创造力密切相关(设计师、软件工程师、作家、活动策划、舞蹈、咨询师)。具备艺术想象力和创造力的孩子有更强的竞争优势。

This class will explore creative art and creative mind trainings together. In this class, you will learn drawing and painting as well as design basic. Starting from different artistic styles as background, students will be practicing one assignment each class will be followed by a review of the student works. Materials such as pencil, crayon, watercolor, pastel, color pencil, acrylic will be used.

Ms. Haiyan Huang earned a PhD in Art and Design from Tsinghua University and MFA in Fine Arts from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. She has been working at Oracle as a Principal Designer since 2015. In her early career, Ms. Huang worked as a recognized printmaking and artist with exhibitions and awards. She has taught classes at Zhejiang University, Xi’an University of Technology, Central China Normal University for over 15 years. She published two books in design and taught courses including sketching, painting, printmaking, graphic design, interface design, visualization, animation etc.

舞蹈小班旨在培养孩子们对舞蹈的兴趣,提高乐感和节奏感,并在舞蹈中锻炼姿态,力量,柔韧度,肢体的平衡和协调能力。

The goal of this class is to nurture the love for dance in young children. Your children will learn through the fun-filled dances choreographed to promote body coordination, balance, strength, flexibility and sense of rhythm.

Ms. Siduo Wang has been studying ballet for 4 years and received training on Flamenco and ballroom dances. She is excited to share her passion and skills for dance with your children.

The curriculum of this class is built upon and progressed from what the junior class offers. This class will be focused on the development of technical foundation, musicality, muscular awareness and execution. In this class your children will continue to develop their aesthetic knowledge and skill in movement expression.

辩论大班  Debate Sr.  Robert W. Gordon

Grade 6 or 11 years or older

Robert W. Gordon, Esq., is the instructor for the Debate and Public Speaking class. He is a trial attorney for the City of New York. He holds a B.A. Degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College, and a Juris Doctor (law degree) from NYU School of Law. He practiced as a litigation attorney for over 10 years. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he taught kindergarten, elementary grades, and High School World History in the Westchester County public schools. He also lectured law at the University of Ulsan for one year in South Korea. In addition to his attorney responsibilities, he tutors and coaches high school students in debate and philosophy as well as adults in public speaking. He has also given lessons to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese adults in English as a second language.

In this class, Mr. Gordon will introduce the process of preparing for a debate, the purposes of debate, and various techniques to use to win debates. Skills introduced will include, forming arguments, research, organizing points for impact, attacking arguments, preparing for rebuttal arguments, and using authority and support for content. The public speaking portion of the class will focus on external presentation skills. Issues such as body language, volume, eye contact, hand gestures, verbal pauses, rhythm, pacing, dynamics, pronunciation, and pitch will be introduced and explained as needed. The goal is to have students comfortable in engaging in debate, do so effectively, and know that there are always at least two sides of an issue that should be explored.

趣味物理大班  Everyday Physics Sr. 杨清波

Grade 5 or 10 years or older

运用数学和物理知识来解释和理解自然和生活中的各种现象。以此激发学生对学习数学和科学的热情。需要有 pre-algebra 程度的数学知识。

杨清波老师有丰富数学物理辅导经验。重视基本概念和思想方法,强调学以致用。

长笛小班  Flute for Beginners Jr.  Dr. Lynn Tsai

Flute for Beginners is designed for children in Grades 1-3 and students who have not taken the class before.

Students will learn the proper way to hold the flute, tricks to establish a flute embouchure, and work towards producing good tones on the flute.  The ultimate goal is to learn a few simple songs on the flute by the end of the school year.  It will be a good head start for those who plan to play the flute in Grades 4+.  Ability to read music is NOT required for this class.

Flutist Lynn Tsai is an active performer and experienced music educator new to Westchester County.  She made her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2009 as a winner of the Artist International Competition.  In 2015 and 2016 she competed in the College Concerto Competition hosted by the Reno Chamber Orchestra, a statewide competition for all instruments, and placed in the top three in both years.  She won the annual Concerto Competition at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2016 and performed the Otaka Flute Concerto with the school’s Symphony Orchestra the following year.  During her doctoral studies at UNLV, she taught Music Fundamentals classes and flute lessons to undergraduate (non-music major) students.  She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from UNLV where she studied with Jennifer Grim.  Her other teachers include Keith Underwood, Tara Helen O’Connor, and Andrée Martin.  Presently, she has a private flute studio in Croton-on-Hudson where she teaches students of all ages.  For more information, please visit her website at www.lynntsai-flute.com.

围棋,国技也。自尧以下五千载,群星璀璨,国手辈出。幼习棋,虽愚笨,然喜逐鹿于纹枰,观龙士之飞龙在天,欣卫平之怒斩六超。尝得桂冠于乡里。今居康省,生计奔波中,仍觅隙温谱诘棋,盖因弈趣味无穷,捭阖跌宕,胜负由一子,生死因先后,时有机敏破敌,时有朴厚守胜。人得此好,可自娱,可众乐,于思辨大有助益,不亦妙乎?

段川9岁学棋,师从魏昕职业四段。 赢得合肥市青少年围棋比赛名次多次,包括1989年未来杯冠军和庐阳杯冠军。 1990年注册为安徽省业余三段,其后加入合肥业余体校围棋队, 并参加数次省级和国家级业余比赛,代表合肥市队取得第17届安徽省运会围棋团体第一名。

Chuan started receiving GO training from Xing Wei (4 dan professional) at the age of 9. He won several youth GO championships in Hefei City, including Future Cup and LuYang Cup, both in 1989.  Chuan was registered as 3 dan amateur of Anhui Province in 1990. He then joined the Hefei municipal amateur GO team. Among provincial and national games he played, he won GO group 1st place in the 17th Province Game.

Java 大班   Java Programming Sr.  屠端华

Grade 6 or 11 years or older

屠老师拥有中国社会科学院研究生院硕士学位和美国约翰霍普金斯大学经济学硕士学位和美国南佛州大学计算机博士candidate. 曾任IBM, JPMorgan Chase, Oracle 软件工程师和软件设计师。屠老师认为,计算机语言是人和计算机沟通的语言,是语言的精简。孩子们学习计算机语言有助于对自然语言的理解。

The students will learn how to program java AWT by designing buttons and text inside a window frame created by students. This course follows the learning by doing principle. It encourages students to practice java programming under some guidance but mostly through self-learning and practice of google-searching java online examples.

Mr. Duanhua Tu was a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at University of South Florida (1998-2000). He received Master Degree in Economics from Johns Hopkins University in 1990. He is a professional computer software engineer and architect and has more than 20 years of experience in computer software design and development. Mr. Tu worked for big IT companies such as IBM and Oracle and big bank such as JP Morgan & Chase in his career.

机器人编程大班 Lego Robotics Sr.  黎明

这个课程上我们会学习如何用 LEGO Mindstorm 为机器人编程。LEGO Mindstorm 采用图形编程界面,类似于Scratch,适合没有编程基础(或者有Scratch编程基础)的低年级孩子。课程以教授编程基础和机器人设计组装为主线,以小 project 为节点,寓教于乐,争取在结业时让每位同学达到FLL比赛要求。

每位同学需要准备一个 LEGO Mindstorm 机器人(family 或者 education版),一台电脑。

黎明老师执教 FLL 机器人比赛两年,Scratch和 Python 编程课三年,Python机器人课半年。有较丰富的编程课经验,懂得如何与6-13岁学生课堂互动。

MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 大班 MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Sr.  倪轶龙

Grade 6 or 11 years or older

Through the exploration of higher level math, students will learn the art of competition math. Students will study how to cope with an extremely time restricted environment, how to deal with problems they may have never encountered before, and most importantly the class will review each common mathematical topic in detail. Subjects covered in this course will contain common subjects from the MathCounts Competition and the AMC 8.

The class is designed to challenge middle school Grs. 6-8 students to develop strong math skills. Students who take this course will be encouraged to register with their home school to compete either as individuals or as part of their school’s’ team in the MathCounts team as well as AMC 8. Topics covered in the course include algebra, counting, probability, number theory and geometry.

倪轶龙老师拥有中国科大(University of Science and Technology of China)数学本科、硕士学位和Yale University 数学博士学位;有多年数学执教经验。曾经教过微积分,数学物理方法,微分方程等课程。

折纸/剪纸 Origami/Paper Cutting   杨丽达

In this class you will learn origami ranging from very easy ones to harder ones. You will not believe how a piece of paper can make magic!  You will also learn paper cutting, which is one of the most popular folk arts in China. The Chinese make paper cutting for celebrating festivals and home decoration. Students who signed up for this class will explore the history and techniques of this beautifully intricate craft.

杨丽达老师自2001年以来一直在华夏纽约教授中国水彩画,剪纸,和基本的绘画技巧。移居美国之前,杨丽达在上海担任美术老师。是儿童畅销书《如何画画》的作者。杨老师也是许多中国中小学艺术教科书的主要编辑之一。杨老师的学生多次荣获国家大奖。

2002年,杨老师参加了Yonkers公共图书馆的艺术展。由于作品的巨大成功,2004年,杨老师被邀请与Yonkers公共图书馆共同主办三个艺术 展。Westchester艺术委员会为她参与了Westchester 2005年秋季艺术世界展给予杨老师奖励。如今,杨老师在 Westchester 教授美术。杨老师从来没有停止过艺术创作。

Mrs. Lida Y. Zimmerman, a native of Shanghai, China, studied under some of the most famous artists of China and was an art teacher for over 10 years in Shanghai. Before emigrating to US, Mrs. Zimmerman taught watercolor, pencil drawing, Chinese watercolor, and the ancient art of Paper Cutting. She published the book “How to Paint.”

She was also one of the chief editors of many art instructional books for elementary and middle schools in China. Her students have received national prizes for their works on many occasions.

She had her first American art exhibition at the Yonkers public library in 2002.  Following the huge success at the Yonkers Public Library, Mrs. Zimmerman was invited back in 2004 to hold three additional exhibitions in Yonkers. In 2005, she was invited to participate in the “Worlds of Westchester 2005 Fall Folk Arts Showcase” at the Westchester Art Council.  Eight pieces of her artwork were on display and 4 were sold on the first day of the show. In 2006 she had an exhibition of her students’ artworks called “Through Their Eyes: Artworks by Chinese American Youth” with the Westchester Art Council. The exhibition was featured on local TV and newspapers. Today, Mrs. Zimmerman continues to teach art in Westchester and is active in the art scene of Westchester.

美术 Painting  Lily Liu

This class introduces painting, drawing, design, and much more for our little and young artists with different types drawing/painting material such as acrylic, watercolor, color pencil and more creative materials.

Classes begin with demonstrations of the exercises followed by one-on-one instruction. Students will also be given optional “homework” assignments that will expand on the material presented in class for those interested.

Mrs. Liu had been working and teaching arts for more than 10 years for children (5-16yrs). She is looking forward to working with our young creative artists together.

Python 大班  Python Sr.  池澄

Grade 6 or 11 years or older

是一门零基础的初级python编程课。同学们将学习一些基本的编程思想,比如,如何定义变量函数和对象,如何做循环。同学们还会接触一些基本的数据结构和类型,比如字符串,列表 ,字典和元组。在这门课中,同学们会一边学习一边练习,通过课堂练习和课后作业的方式让同学们增强对这些概念的认知,享受编程的乐趣。

This is an entry level python class. In this class, students will learn basic concepts of coding: such as variables, functions, objects, and how to write a loop. Student will also learn basic data structures, such as string, list, dictionary, tuples. Students are expected to have a lot of hands-on experience, including classroom exercise and homework projects. Happy coding!

英文阅读与写作大班 Reading & Writing in English Sr. 王思博

Grade 6 or 11 years or older

This course in English reading and writing aims to help students gain insight and understanding of techniques and skills within the English language; to cultivate effective study strategies for improving English proficiency catered specifically to each student; and to obtain crucial, practical skills in reading and writing with life-long applications.

Sibo Wang graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in May of 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in double majors: International Relations, and Music. With a vast amount of experience in English writing and public speaking, standardized exams such as the SAT, as well as having recently aced the GRE exam with outstanding scores, Sibo aims to share his expertise and guide other students to achieve success on their path to university education.

拼字技巧  Scrabble  Cornelia Guest

This semester’s Scrabble classes will take place on the online Scrabble platform called the Internet Scrabble Club (ISC). You can preview this free channel at https://isc.ro.  I recommend choosing the option of TWL (the American Dictionary), the English language, and “Void” challenge, which doesn’t allow phoney words to be played. 
Students will sign up for ISC and share their handles with the class.  At class time, I will match students and observe games, commenting on their plays.

I will be using my private channel, #35, to talk to the group on ISC.
While it’s not the same as drawing tiles from a bag and placing them on a board, online Scrabble is lots of fun and educational. Students will improve their vocabulary, math skills, and empirical thinking skills.  Come join the fun!

Mrs. Guest has been teaching Scrabble to young players since 2005, and she is currently teaching at four different libraries and schools (in addition to teaching private lessons). She is a director of the North American Scrabble Players Association and has directed over 100 Scrabble tournaments for all ages—including five New England School Scrabble Championships and a division of last year’s National Scrabble Championship. She plays regularly in Scrabble tournaments and run two evening Scrabble Clubs. She also publishes a monthly newsletter for Scrabble players, The Last Word (www.TheLastWordNewsletter.com). She is the mother of triplets, all of whom enjoy Scrabble (her daughter and her teammate were the 2007 National School Scrabble Champions). Once the students become familiar with the game, Ms. Guest can arrange tournaments at the school and bring interested students to open competitions. She has taken many teams to Nationals, and she has the strongest record of top-ten finishes of any coach in the country (including two first-place finishes). Among the students she has started out is the current #1 Youth Player in the world, who became the youngest expert in Scrabble history at the age of 11.Ms. Guest enjoys teaching Scrabble to children and believes that our students would find the program stimulating. Whether they choose to play Scrabble for pleasure or hope to go to the Nationals, they will definitely gain a strong dexterity with language. Parents too will enjoy this game which can be played by all ages.

Scratch Programming   王佳岚

Minimum Age Requirement for Scratch Jr Class: Grade 2 or 7 years or older

Jialan Wang earned a master degree in Computer Science from Marist College. She worked at IBM for 6 years before she quit her job to become a full-time mom for her 4 boys. She has been teaching children Scratch at Chinese School for 3 years. She implemented the classic games in Scratch such as Pacman, Connect 4, Tetris, Snake, Dig Dug, Color Switch, 2048, T-Rex Runner, Arkanoid, Frogger, Space Invaders, Minesweeper, and more. Through these games, children learn not only basic programming skills, but also advanced concepts such as clones, lists, strings, scope of variables, your own blocks, nested loop, and recursion.

Scratch is a wildly popular educational programming language used by millions of first-time learners in classrooms, libraries, and homes worldwide. In this class, young students will learn programming fundamentals as they make their very own video games. By dragging together colorful blocks of code, kids quickly learn computer programming concepts and make cool games and animations. They’ll create projects inspired by classic arcade games that can be programmed (and played!).

缝纫艺术 Sewing Terry Taylor

Let’s stitch up some excitement this year with sewing instructor Terry Taylor. This virtual sewing class is a year long, life-skills building experience with fabric and thread. Create many adorable projects like, stuffed owls, foxes, turtles and unicorn friends from patterns, design a fluffy pillow for your bed and more. During this hands-on crafting class, students will learn how to sew, how to use patterns, pin and cut out fabric and felt, and embellish their projects with buttons and decorative stitching. Patterns for projects will be emailed to students prior to class to print out at home.

新加坡数学小班  Singapore Math Jr.  Academy Corner Instructors

In this course, we will explain model drawing in a way that is easy and useful to children. Models can be drawn in many ways. Detailed step-by-step workings are provided in the worked solutions to show how the word problems can be solved in various ways. Topics include numbers, length, mass, money and volume. We will adjust the difficulty and pace depending on the children’s level in the class. The objective of this course is to inspire the children’s interests in math at early age. The children learn to read a problem, access the known and unknown, draw a model to represent the problem, and in the process, simplify the problem to see a solution.

Yi Wang is a software engineer who published free libre and open source apps with active users from various platforms. He believes the future evolution of personal computing is going to be more decentralized, and more about better organizing individual’s information and making it locally accessible and useful.

瑜伽大班  Yoga for Kids Sr.   解雪梅

Do you love nature & animals? Do you want to boost your confidence and have positive self-image?

Do you want to find ways to release stress and cultivate your focus? If your answer is yes, then “Yoga for Kids” is right for you!

While you are practicing poses like cats, dogs, monkeys, eagles, trees, bridges, you strengthen your bodies and calm your minds. While you are dancing with your breaths, you cultivate awareness of mind and body connection. While you stay present and focused in challenging poses, you learn that how you handle the challenge on the mat is how you handle the challenges off the mat. Ms. Xuemei Xie has been practicing yoga for over ten years, and has been leading Yoga Club for Parents for several years. She is excited to share her yoga experience with younger members of HXNYC community.
