Curriculum Overview

HXNYC offers a comprehensive curriculum to all students who bring with them diverse learning styles, objectives, and family backgrounds. Our programs and services deploy a variety of proven ideas, methods and tools to help each student reach his or her learning potential. Our administrators and teachers continue to explore and identify innovative ways to best meet our students’ and families’ needs in this rapidly changing and inter-connected world.

Our ultimate objective is to spark and retain our students’ interest in learning Chinese while providing them with necessary tools for listening, speaking, reading and even writing Chinese proficiently in their individual context. One of the tools is in-class cultural enrichment which effectively reinforces students’ language learning. Another tool is multimedia presentations which facilitate an all-sensory learning.

As part of our curriculum, we offer a core immersion learning program in addition to other strands with varied focuses on reading comprehension and conversational fluency. We also offer CSL, Chinese as a Second Language, to meet demand from the community at large. Depending on individual learning objectives and abilities, a student may begin by taking a pre-kindergarten class and continue through the 9th grade until graduation. As a student progresses, he or she may choose to migrate among the different learning strands. Students who have graduated may also choose to remain at the school by enrolling in an AP Chinese class or volunteering as teaching assistants among other opportunities.

Immersion Program
Our core immersion program emphasizes a comprehensive learning experience with the objective of achieving both language and cultural fluency. Instructors deploy a variety of teaching methods and materials including textbooks designed systematically by leading educators in mainland China. Instructors frequently incorporate into their teaching and homework other materials including songs, poems and essay samplers beyond any chosen textbooks. In the course of acquiring language skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar, students also obtain rich exposure to Chinese geography, history, customs, mythologies, and classic writings.

Supplemental Programs
Our supplemental programs are designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. For example, some of our students prefer the comfort of learning words and sentences with meanings that they can relay to. Our classes of conversational or practical Chinese may suit such students well. Other families may choose to have their young children build up a sizable vocabulary first before having them move on with building other skills. Such students have the option of enrolling in classes with particular emphasis in reading comprehension through children’s songs, poems and stories. Students as young as five years old may find such classes particularly accessible.

CSL Program
In the interest of meeting increasing demand for learning Chinese, we have been offering CSL classes to all members of our larger community. CSL classes are particularly conducive to beginners and adult students who wish to ease into learning Chinese with the help of their native language, English. The students who enroll in CSL classes in our school will have the benefit of intermingling with other students in the same culture classes. Depending on assessments of their progress, they will also have potential opportunities to transfer to classes of alternative learning strands.

“Ma Li Ping Chinese” was specially designed for children who already understand the spoken Chinese and wish to acquire a higher level of fluency in reading. It best suits children from families where both parents are Chinese speakers. It begins with reading the Chinese characters without the help of Pinyin, the phonetic system. This “Direct Character Recognition” methodology is the brainchild of a Chinese language educator who lives and teaches in the Bay area near San Francisco. Pinyin is introduced after students have already mastered more than 700 characters. The curriculum includes textbooks, accompanying exercise booklets and CD-ROMs for homework. The homework is easy to follow and designed to allow students to complete them in the right order and independ of parental help. The curriculum focuses on reading, listening, speaking, with writing coming much later.

一年级 马立平《中文》一年级(第一,二,三册) 授课对象:家庭语言背景为汉语普通话的,并具备简单汉语听说能力的5岁以上的儿童。
教学方法与手段:采用由易到难,循序渐进的直接认字法。以老师讲授为主,并辅以形式多样的课堂提问来调动学生的主观能动性。在课堂中穿插适当的教学游戏,尽量创造轻松愉快的教学氛围,与学生开展互动式课堂模式。 在教学中采用鼓励,诱导和启发等方式,授课内容兼顾汉语教学的文化性,趣味性和实用性。教学进度为:每周讲解一篇课文,个别难度稍大的课文分两周完成。学生配合教学进度,进行课前预习,并完成单双周练习册中的家庭作业和多媒体光盘作业。每册的教学完成之后,通过考试进行复习巩固。
Grade 1 For Grade 1 students learning Chinese Language Art, “Ma Li Ping” Level 1. Volumes 1, 2, 3 will be used. Students who complete this one year curriculum will have acquired 302 characters and 174 Chinese radicals. This full year curriculum provides opportunities to learn all four macro-skills, namely, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are expected to integrate 302 new characters and basic Chinese grammar to read and write more than 30 short fairy tales through repetition of the characters and grammatical patterns introduced in the curriculum.
二年级 马立平«中文»教材四,五,六册 授课对象:完成了中文(马立平)一年级学习或具有相当中文程度的学生。
主要教学内容:通过本课程的学习,学生能够认读常用汉字380个,阅读75 相应中文水平的故事 、 寓言、幽默、儿歌、谜语.
教学方法与手段: 用中文授课, 激励启发谈话, 培养学生听说能力, 让学生当小演员,表演课文内容. 在具体的语言环境中识字,组词,造句. 运用多种识字的方法,培养学生的识字能力.
Grade 2 For students who have completed “Ma Li Ping” level 1, they will move up to Level 2 which will use textbooks volume 4, 5, 6. In the second year curriculum, students are expected to learn 380 commonly used Chinese characters, 47 commonly used Chinese radicals. The syllubus consists of 75 stories or poems. Emphasis is on recognizing Chinese characters through extensive reading of stories, children songs, fables or poems. Retelling of stories or poems are encouraged to help with the ability speaking Chinese on their own.
三年级 马立平«中文»第七,八,九册 授课对象:完成了中文(马立平)二年级学习或具有相当中文程度的学生。
教学方法与手段:课堂教学及多媒体光盘练习。学期末,要求每位同学做一个五十到一百字的主题墙报,带 插图,算作期末考试的一部分。
Grade 3 For students who have completed “Ma Li Ping” Level 2, they will move up to Level 3 which will use textbooks Volumes 7, 8, 9 which will introduce Pinyin and 360 new characters. Emphasis is on recognizing additional 360 Chinese characters while reviewing the 1,000 characters learned in the past through more reading of stories and poems. Introducing writing in Chinese on the computer by inputting Pinyin. As part of the final exam, students are required to creating a poster with 50-100 characters and illustrations.
四年级 马立平《中文》教材四年级(第十册,第十一册,第十二册) 授课对象:完成了中文(马立平)三年级学习或具有相当中文程度的学生。
教学目的:通过本课程的学习,学生将认知300多个 新的常用字词,并复习以前所学字词,累积掌握词汇将达1384字。 进一步了解中国文化,提高语言口头表达能力。
主要教学内容:1诗歌:生肖歌,时光老人的礼物,,河神和海神,献给亲爱的妈 妈,时间的歌。
Grade 4 Level 4 will use textbooks Volumes 10, 11, 12 which will introduce 300 new characters. By the end of Level 4, students would have accumulated 1,384 characters). Learn a variety of literature genres (poetry, narrative stories, essays, non-fictions) . More complex grammar will be introduced. Emphasize on all four macro-skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
五年级 马立平《中文》教材 第13, 14, 15 册 1. 教学目的:

Grade 5 For students who have completed Ma Li Ping Level 4, or Standard Chinese Level 5. Textbooks Volumes 13, 14, 15 will be used. Level 5 will teach students how to look up characters using a dictionary and to write in Chinese on a computer by inputting pinyin using keyboards. Students will be able to read abridged chapters from the Chinese classic novel “Journey to the West”. Emphasize on recalling commonly-used characters with ease.
六年级 马立平《中文》教材 第16,17,18 册 授课对象:完成了中文(马立平)五年级学习或具有相当中文程度的学生。
1. 提高学生熟读中短篇文章的能力;
2. 提高学生写短篇文章的能力;

5. 根据课文内容,分组分角色扮演小孩,老人,猴子,河马,大象,大王… 习惯使用中文复述故事的能力。
Grade 6 For students who have completed “Ma Li Ping” Level 5, or Standard Chinese Level 6. Textbooks Volumes 16, 17, 18 will be used for Level 6. While Continuing to improve on reading and speaking, writing is formally introduced. Literary works of Contemporary writers are introduced. Learn and practice retelling stories or poems. Learn and practice simple English translation into Chinese.

The language curriculum of HXNYC offers a learning sequence in Practical Chinese. In this sequence lessons incorporate terms, objects and topics familiar to students who grow up in North America. Below is a summary of what students expect to learn and progress from grade 1 through grade 9.

一年级 《美洲华语》第1册 一年级课程,根据美洲地区六岁至八岁学童的认知层面和生活体验,教导学童数字与基本量词、认识五官及双手,并结合童谣及儿歌,让学童在有乐趣的环境中,学会一年十二个月、大小与位置,并能自我介绍及结交朋友。
二年级 《美洲华语》第2册 二年级课程,是以美洲地区小学二年级学生各项学科的知识水平和对生活的体验,用“象形字的由来”一文来介绍中国文字。课程中并加入绕口令、谜语和年的故事,进一步教导学生认识中国文化,如春节、十二生肖和中国毛笔的典故暨由来。
Grade 1 and 2 In grades 1 and 2, students are introduced to the most basic words and concepts such as numbers, classifiers, senses and body parts. They learn about the pictorial graphic origin of Chinese characters and Chinese culture covering the likes of Spring Festival and the twelve zodiac signs. Through songs, poems, tongue twisters and riddles, students learn to express months, locations, and make self-introduction to new friends.
三年级 《美洲华语》第3册 三年级开始,将加强认字与读字能力,并教导学童如何使用字典。除认识基本标点符号外,课程里还结合了嫦娥奔月、猴子捞月、南瓜灯笼及万圣节等故事,让学生在浅显易懂的文字中,逐步了解字形和字义,并做看图造句的练习。
四年级 《美洲华语》第4册 四年级的课程内容,将以贴近生活、诙谐有趣的方式,结合温馨童诗、感恩节、传统面食—水饺的制作过程、端午节的由来、北极星、指南针等具人文性、富知识性的文章,让学生学生字、写造句,并练习查阅字典。
五年级 《美洲华语》第5册 五年级的课程,将以饶富趣味性和知识性的故事、短文、新诗和对话,如华人棒球队、中国花木兰及美国花木兰、健康的饮食习惯等,使学生沉浸于丰富的语言运用和有乐趣的学习情境中学习中文。除生字和造句练习,老师将引领学生对课文进行对话和深入的探讨练习。
Grade 3,4 and 5 Beginning in grade 3, the focus is moved to building abilities in reading and understanding characters through stories of legend, holidays and food making among other topics. Through grade 4 and 5, students learn to use dictionaries, make sentences, and look for overall themes in reading materials.
六年级 《美洲华语》第6册 六年级的课程重心,将着重于学生的中文沟通能力。在老师的指导下,学生初步接触人文科学的课文,如万里长城,音乐与乐器,和计算机。并以相互对话的练习方式,来学习用中文表达自己的意思。
七年级 《美洲华语》第7册 七年级课程,介绍“China”的由来、餐馆点菜、鸦片战争、认识中药及针灸、和准备SAT中文等。在老师的鼓励下,学生就日常生活中经常接触到的主题进行讨论,让学生借着彼此讨论来学习,进而强化中文的沟通能力。
八年级 《美洲华语》第8册 八年级的课程,秉持着螺旋式的字词学习方式,由易而难;前面所学的字词将不断出现,从而让学生温故知新。此外,借着名牌商品与价值观、中文里的外来词、中国十二星座等课程内容,让学生就生活当中经常接触的主题进行讨论,并加强学生应用成语和常用语的口语表达能力。
Grade 6,7 and 8 In grades 6, 7 and 8, the focus is transitioned to building overall communication skills. Lessons increasingly incorporate topics in history, music, technology, medicine among other disciplines. Practices and discussions are built around students’ vocabulary for retention and applications.
九年级 《美洲华语》第9册 九年级的课程将从学生日常家庭生活、学校生活,扩展到社会生活和海外生活圈。老师除了介绍调职、搬家、转学、到外地发展等,将特别注重辅导学生通过SAT中文测验和AP中文考试。
Grade 9 As students advance through grade 9, lessons expand to cover topics beyond daily family and school lives. Students practice reading newspaper articles and published essays among other materials. Themed discussions are regularly organized during class time. Additional emphasis is placed on preparing students for taking tests of SAT Chinese and AP Chinese. Upon conclusion of 9th grade, students are expected to converse, read, and write in Chinese with a level of confidence.

AP Chinese “Jia You” The AP Chinese Language and Culture course is designed to be comparable to fourth semester (or the equivalent) college/university courses in Mandarin Chinese. The AP course prepares students to demonstrate their level of Chinese proficiency across the three communicative modes (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) and the five goal areas (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) as outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Its aim is to provide students with ongoing and varied opportunities to further develop their proficiencies across the full range of language skills within a cultural frame of reference reflective of the richness of Chinese language and culture.Course Content: The first half of the school year is dedicated to go through the AP Chinese Exam textbooks, the second half of the school year is arranged to conduct multiple mock examinations on AP Chinese, SAT Chinese and HSK5. Exams include listening comprehension, reading comprehension, essay writing, oral exam recording. Through the repetitive mock tests and analysis of test papers, teacher will help students establish an accurate understanding of the wealth of Chinese language and culture, so that students can be proficient in the Chinese language.Course Objectives: Prepare students for the College Board AP Chinese Exam, SAT II Chinese Exam, HSK Level 5 & 6 Exam. Help students develop awareness, skills and appreciation of the Chinese Language and Culture. Engage students in an exploration of both contemporary and historical Chinese culture. Prepare students for the College Board AP Chinese Exam.Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Students who take this course should have completed the Huaxia Chinese school 9th grade courses or Chinese courses at the equivalent level.

Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) is offered to non-Chinese speaking students who have no prior knowledge of the language and Chinese is not spoken at home. The Beginner Level (CSL 1 & 2) will focus on the basics of Mandarin pronunciation, beginner conversation, reading and writing Chinese characters. Chinese culture and customs will also be introduced. The Intermediate Level (CSL 3 & 4) continues to improve on communication skills through vocabulary building, reading and writing Chinese characters.

For children 5 years and older and with no background in Chinese. Use “My First Chinese Word” textbook. Learn Pinyin romanization system, simplified Chinese characters, basic sentences, rudimentary dialogues, and characters writing.
CSL2 《快乐儿童华语》第二册 学生年龄在七岁以上,完成《快乐儿童华语》第一册的学习。采用的教材是《快乐儿童华语》第二册,使学生达到会读、会写会用本册中学过的字和词语;熟练准确的阅读课文,并将学过的句型应用在日常生活中。
For children 7 years and older and completed “My First Chinese Reader” Volume 1. Use “My First Chinese Reader” Volume 2. Students will build on what they have learned and move onto more extensive reading and writing. Students are also expected to apply what they learn to communicate better.
CSL3 《快乐儿童华语》第三册 学生年龄在七岁以上,完成《快乐儿童华语》第二册的学习。本年级采用的教材《快乐儿童华语》第三册,使学生达到能认、读、写所学过的近200个左右的字和词语,并会应用其中的常用词语; 能使用所学过的简单的陈述句、疑问句和否定句。达到《标准中文》第一册中文水平的同学,通过测试可以选择进入普通中文班学习。
For children 7 years and older and completed My First Chinese Reader Volume 2. Use My First Chinese Reader Volume 3. Students will read, write up to 200 Chinese characters and will be able to use them in daily life. Students will learn simple sentence making, form questions and negative sentences. Will be placed in Standard Chinese class upon passing the final exam.
CSL4 《快乐儿童华语》第四册 学生年龄在八岁以上,完成《快乐儿童华语》第三册的学习。本年级采用的教材是《快乐儿童华语》第四册,使学生能熟练掌握和应用已学过的24个句型。 达到《标准中文》第二册中文水平的同学,通过测试可以选择进入普通中文班学习。
For children 8 years and older and completed “My First Chinese Reader Volume 3″. Use “My First Chinese Reader Volume 4″. Students will master 24 sentence patterns which puts them at the same level of the “Standard Chinese” Level 1, Volume 2. Will be placed in Standard Chinese class upon passing the final exam.
学前小班和学前大班是个连贯的语言培养过程,环环相扣。华夏纽约中心以陈璇老师为首的学前小班和学前大班的老师团队,互相交流,互相借鉴,结合美国教学方式和中国传统教学理念,同心协力来培养好孩子们。陈璇老师是Westchester 公立学校K-4兼任助教,善于教学于那些需要特殊关心和教育的孩子。她同时还在北威中文学校七年级任教,她获得了孔子学院总部颁发的教师培训资格证书和今年华夏总校的优秀老师。陈老师在教学中摸索出一套教拼音、认字、笔画和对话的行之有效的教学互动方法。每堂课前,她都为学生量体裁衣设置十分明确易懂的目标,保证每一堂课都生动有趣。陈老师还通过用游戏、手工和讲故事等多样化教学手段,真正让学生体会到学中文既容易也很有趣。

年级 课程介绍
学前小班 好奇、好问、好动、爱模仿是幼儿的年龄特点和心理特征。幼儿能够按自己的意识去做某件事,无兴趣的事他很难去做,所以教师常会用歌舞,讲故事,游戏来吸引住这些意识随意的幼儿,来促进、培养幼儿对语言的兴趣及能力,发展幼儿对中文的感受力、记忆力、想象力和表现能力,陶冶幼儿性情和品格。Pre-K 适合3-5岁。学前小班提供了一个适合幼儿年龄特点和心理特征的环境,让幼儿通过唱唱、跳跳、念念、做做、玩玩的方法很快就学会了中文。我们的老师善于观察幼儿,关重幼儿的个体差异,把最温馨的目光、最慈祥的笑容、最真切的话语、最真挚的鼓励、最真诚的希望献给孩子们。我们的老师善于爱,更是体现在尊重幼儿的情绪情感,尊重幼儿的选择和判断,用协商的、建议的语气说话,会使幼儿感到平等、感到被尊重。信任幼儿、鼓励幼儿,让幼儿得到锻炼和发展。我们的老师更懂得,老师的一次点头,一个微笑、一句表场就如同一场知时节的好雨,赋予幼苗向上的信心和生长的力量,让孩子在“我是好孩子”的心态中成长。诚恳欢迎您和您的孩子来亲自体验我们出色的老师们是如何成就我们高质量的学前小班。
Pre-K Provide a nurturing environment for children 3-5 years old to learn Chinese through play, music, arts and crafts. Focus more on listening comprehension and oral expression. Student should be at least 3 years old when school starts.
学前大班 早期识字对生长在海外的中国儿童的中文学习具有特殊意义。学前儿童在感知觉方面已有一定的发展,对图像感知较强,形象记忆好,这就决定了他们对汉字字形的感知能力较强,而听故事的过程更是以形象记忆为主。充分利用儿童的这一特点,让他们从小就接触中文世界。
伴随着学前儿童成长。通过看图识字,看图说话,讲故事,我们优秀敬业的老师们精心培养儿童对中文的感情和兴趣。我们的老师们讲故事的语言生动,表象清晰鲜明,儿童化,可使孩子移情于境,了解到很多的小常识。老师会引导孩子复述故事,用孩子自己的言语来讲述故事里的人物和情节,这对孩子的言语、记忆、逻辑、想像能力是最好的锻炼。老师还教授拼音,正确书写汉字的基本笔画,手工艺术,儿歌,舞蹈,美术及中文游戏。在整个学期中,要求能从听不懂中文到听懂,不会讲中文到会讲,学会用中文问问题,能用中文清楚地表达自已的意思,掌握一定量的汉字及词汇。就在转眼之间,你会听到孩子对你说 “妈妈,我给你讲个故事,好吗?” 。
学前大班 Kindergarten 适合5岁以上孩子。要求新生能用普通话简单的问题,表达自已的意思,要有较长的注意力。教授拼音,手工,儿歌及学中文游戏,掌握100个汉字及词汇。
Kindergarten Kindergarten is for children 5 years or older. Student should be able to express themselves and ask questions in simple Chinese. Teaches Pinyin, crafts, rhymes, and Chinese games. Learn about 100 Chinese characters and related vocabulary.
